Top 12 Reef-Friendly Sunscreens in Australia to Keep You and Our Oceans Safe

Written for Auski by Pink Lemonade Social

Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide into this summer. But don’t forget to be safe - Reef Safe to be exact. Australia is home to some hottest summers and some of the best beaches in the world which we want to keep that way. When enjoying an Aussie Christmas break or lazy summer days at the beach it’s important to protect your skin and our oceans, and choosing a reef safe sunscreen is one easy way you help yourself and the environment.

But what is reef-safe sunscreen or reef-friendly sunscreen, and why is it important?

Reef-safe” or “reef-friendly” is usually used to describe sunscreens that don’t contain are typically contain oxybenzone and octinoxate (two common UV-blocking chemicals) which through scientific studies have shown to cause coral bleaching – something that is severely affecting our very own Great Barrier Reef. It is estimated that up to 6,000 tons of sunscreen are washed into coral reefs around the world each year – not great. Interestingly, the state of Hawaii was the first to ban the sale of sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate in July 2018.

What to look for in Reef Safe Sunscreen:

  • Choose Non-nano & Mineral sunscreens – these are usually made from zinc oxide and titanium dioxide that don’t contain nano-particles which means the particles in the sunscreen are too large to be ingested by coral and are less impactful to reefs.
  • Use rub-on lotions – lotions rather than sprays are less likely to be washed into the ocean.
  • Good water resistance– a reef-safe sunscreen that stays on longer is less likely to wash off as well as providing longer protection. Make sure to follow the instructions and wait for the sunscreen to be absorbed before heading in the water.
  • Non-toxic, paraben-free and organic when you can! Selecting non-toxic and organic sunscreen (where possible) can aid in reducing reef damage, though organic sunscreens tend to cost more. Most child-friendly sunscreens are more likely to contain natural ingredients.

What to avoid in Reef Friendly Sunscreen:

  • Avoid sunscreen containing octinoxate and oxybenzone
  • Avoid sunscreen containing Cinnamates and Parabens - Parabens have been found to be harmful to reefs.
  • As mentioned above, avoid aerosols – more likely to be washed in the water.

This is an awesome article. I absolutely love the Great Barrier Reef and it’s so good to find there are products that are actually trying to do something to reduce bleaching etc. There are some really fantastic eco friendly products on the market now for both sunscreens and self tanning products. There really is no reason not to use these products and help do something for the planet (while using top quality products on your skin). My fave self tanner is a new one called Bondi Bodz and part of the reason I love them so much is the fact they are vegan and eco friendly with all natural ingredients.

The products you have included here are a really great selection of reef safe sun tan lotions.

Thanks for an awesome article.
